Yes, VoIP (voice over IP) has matured to the level of business class service. Our company made the move to VoIP as our main phone system in 2005. After having used the system for one year we decided to become a reseller of VoIP PBX systems. Most businesses, if not all, can benefit from the flexibility and feature sets offered in today's VoIP systems.

What is the downside, if any?

Well, VoIP runs on the same network as computers, desktops, laptops, and/or servers, so the network infrastructure has to be sound in order for such a system to be fully functional. But, it can and should work very well if professionally installed and maintained
